September STEAM Region 19 Science Dinner, Topic: the Great Shakeout 2026 with Dr. Aaron Velasco

The Science Dinner is BACK! πŸŽ‰πŸ”¬

After a three-year pause, STEAM Region 19 is bringing back one of our favorite traditions β€” Science Dinners!

And we have a great speaker to help us kick things off.

Join us in September as UTEP Professor and Texas State Seismologist Dr. Aaron Velasco takes us beneath the surface to talk about earthquakes, earthquake safety in El Paso, and the Great ShakeOut‍ ‍2026β€” an international earthquake preparedness program coming to local schools this fall.

Learn about the science behind earthquakes, what earthquake risk looks like here in our own region, and how the Great ShakeOut gives students and schools an opportunity to practice what to do when the ground starts shaking.

But Science Dinner has always been about more than the presentation.

It’s a chance for science teachers, professors, instructional coaches, informal educators, and other science-minded folks from across the Borderland to get together, share a meal, talk science, exchange ideas, and reconnect with our science education community.

After three years away, we’re ready to do that again.
